The Endurance Test
Just how long will the S-Series tool’s touchscreen hold up in factory conditions? That’s the question the endurance test seeks to answer.
The point of the test is to simulate long-term use of the touchscreen in the most demanding of environments. Results generated in a sterile lab setting don’t necessarily mean anything on the plant floor, where dust and debris are an everyday reality.
To get more realistic testing conditions, the touchscreens are dusted with sawdust and sand-lime brick.
Each screen then undergoes 300,000 actuations in 3 different places. The test shows the screen holds up to wear and tear, even when it’s coated in dust.
The endurance test also showcases just how easy it is to operate the S-Series tool’s touchscreen, even when the surface is dust-covered and operators are wearing gloves.
Putting the Touchscreen Under Stress
The endurance test simulates long-term use of the screen, but what about more demanding plant environments? Dust and debris may not be the only concerns on the floor.
The vibration test is the answer. Each touchscreen is tested extensively on the “shaker” bench, which vibrates. It also spends time in the climate box, which simulates the extreme temperatures of plant environments.
The results show the touchscreen in the new S-Series is more than up to the task. Even in the harshest environments, you can be sure the touchscreen’s electronics will keep functioning. Heat and humidity can do a number on electronic devices. The S-Series handles these extreme conditions easily.
Testing Durability
What happens if someone drops an S-Series tool from a height? What if a tool box topples off a bench and lands on the touchscreen?
If you’re thinking of the touchscreen in your iPhone, you’re probably envisioning the spider-web cracking that makes the screen virtually unusable.
Not so with the touchscreen in the S-Series tool. This screen has been tested to ensure it can withstand a steel ball being dropped directly onto it.
In this test, a 50 mm steel ball weighing more than half a kilogram is dropped onto the display from a height of 600 mm.
